About the artwork

Who is the artist behind Sights East?

Sights East is the studio of Pewo, a hand-lettering and tattoo artist from Brighton, Florida, on the Seminole reservation near Okeechobee. He has been drawing letters since he was a teenager and started tattooing at 29. Every piece on this site begins as hand-drawn lettering — no fonts, no vectors.

What kind of art does Pewo make?

Hand lettering. Words and phrases drawn by hand, built letter by letter, then finished as paintings or prints. Pieces start in pencil, move to ink, and sometimes end under spray paint. The work is about balance and structure — how wide the letters sit from each other, where they thicken, where they thin.

Is the lettering style connected to Pewo's Seminole heritage?

No, and Pewo is direct about that. His lettering comes out of tattoo culture and the Los Angeles lettering tradition — artists who took lettering seriously as its own genre and pushed it forward. What drew him in was the strength of it and how authentic it looked on skin. His heritage and his family's creative work are a separate thread in his life.

Why does the word "love" show up so often?

It is the word Pewo has drawn more than any other. The cursive L flows clean, and he keeps coming back to it — it is his most practiced letter and his most practiced word to date.

Prints, paper and sizes

What paper are the prints made on?

Archival pigment prints on light cardstock, 180–200 gsm. Every print in the shop uses the same stock, so the finish is consistent across the whole collection.

What sizes are available?

Two image sizes: 11 x 14 inches and 16 x 20 inches. Both are available unframed or framed.

Are the prints signed?

Yes. Every print is signed by the artist.

Do prints come framed?

Framing is available as an option at checkout, or you can order the print on its own. Choose your option on the product page before adding to cart.

Original paintings

Can I buy an original painting?

Yes. Pewo has five original paintings available right now. Originals are one of a kind — once a piece sells, it is gone, and it will not be reprinted as an edition.

How is an original different from a print?

An original is the painted piece itself, made by hand and sold once. A print is an archival reproduction on 180–200 gsm cardstock, signed by the artist, available in 11 x 14 and 16 x 20.

How often does new work come in?

It depends on the piece. A painting can come together in about a week. A larger one takes a month or two. Pewo has one he has been working on for over a year and is in no rush to finish. Join the email list to hear when new work goes up.
